What is couples therapy?

Couples therapy is a form of counselling designed to help partners address and resolve conflicts, improve communication, and strengthen their relationships. It provides a safe space for both individuals to express their thoughts and feelings, explore the underlying issues affecting their partnership, and practice healthier interaction patterns.

Therapists often employ various techniques and approaches tailored to each couple's specific dynamics. These may include communication skills training, conflict resolution strategies, and exploring emotional intimacy. The goal is to better understand each partner's needs, perspectives, and behaviours, creating a healthier and happier relationship dynamic.

How a couples therapist can help you

Couples counselling offers numerous benefits to help your relationship thrive and prepare for the next steps toward a shared future. One widely recognised and successful approach is the Gottman Method, specifically designed for couples therapy to address and overcome relational challenges.

Gottman Method for Couple Therapy

The most common process for couples therapy is the Gottman Method, which focuses on disarming verbal conflicts, removing emotional barriers and creating a heightened sense of understanding and empathy. This approach sees couples experience positive changes in their relationship, including:

Communication skill building

Learn how to effectively communicate your thoughts and emotions to understand and support each other.

Create a deeper emotional connection

Addressing the emotional needs of each partner helps couples feel more connected and supported.

Conflict resolution

Develop healthier ways to manage and resolve conflicts, preventing recurring issues from damaging your relationship.

Understand each other better

Gain valuable insights into each other's perspectives, fostering empathy and mutual respect.

Feel satisfied in your relationship

As communication improves and emotional bonds deepen, many couples feel more satisfied and secure.

The Gottman Method is designed to address current challenges and provide couples with the skills and tools necessary to maintain a healthy, fulfilling relationship in the long term. Whether you face ongoing difficulties or want to strengthen your bond, this evidence-based approach can help you build a lasting partnership rooted in trust, respect, and understanding.

When to seek relationship counselling

Couples don't need a specific reason to seek relationship counselling. Many turn to a therapist to enhance their relationship and feel more connected. This isn't always the case; some couples turn to couples counselling when conflicts arise, or the relationship feels strained. Counselling helps resolve issues and move towards a place of contentment and fulfilment.

Therapy sessions use evidence-based approaches to bring you and your partner closer and move forward, creating a sense of unity and shared mentality. Rekindle the emotional connection between you and your partner with Brendon Wright Psychology.

How many sessions will my partner and I need?

The number of sessions you and your partner will need depends on your individual needs. Some couples may quickly identify and resolve their issues, while others may require more guidance and support. Progress isn't always linear, and we believe that achieving your desired outcomes doesn't have to have a timeline.

Can couples therapy save my relationship?

Therapists are here to support you by fostering healthy communication and strategies to enhance your relationship. However, we can't force partners to stay together if that's not what both of you want, and ultimately, your relationship is between you and your partner. While couples therapy has been shown to increase the likelihood of staying together, each relationship is unique and faces challenges.

Is it too early in my relationship to seek couples therapy?

There's no one-size-fits-all answer to this question. Each couple has unique timelines, expectations, and backgrounds. If you believe couples therapy could benefit you early in your relationship, it may help you navigate potential challenges and prevent issues.

Do you offer online therapy for couples?

Telehealth is available upon request. You will be provided with a link before your session. All fees and processes remain the same. However, many couples benefit from being in the same physical therapy room during this process.

Are all sessions with both partners?

Sessions are designed to support both partners, and most will include both of you. However, there are instances where meeting with one partner individually can be beneficial for exploring personal concerns and the context surrounding the relationship.
